Dear SCAN members and friends,

Efforts are underway to reopen commercial abalone harvesting off southern California's San Miguel Island and the Farallon Islands 26 miles west of San Francisco.  These efforts are sponsored by would-be commercial abalone divers with support and encouragement from certain members of the California Fish and Game Commission and the Department of Fish and Game.

The Sonoma County Abalone Network, the Recreational Fishing Alliance and California's active Dive Councils are currently opposed to any opening abalone fishing south of San Francisco and have repeatedly stated this opposition to the Fish and Game Commission.  It is the Fish and Game Commission that is considering this renewed fishery.

Please consider adding your name to a petition (sponsored by the Recreational Fishing Alliance) and send a message to the State that a reopening of San Miguel Island or the Farallons is not acceptable.  And don't forget to get your friends, neighbors and relatives to do the same. You will be helping yourself and the State's most favored and imperiled mollusc.
